페인팅(Painting)의 사전적 의미는 ‘그림’ 이자 동시에 ‘그리기’ 란 뜻을 내포한다. 페인팅이란 단어는 주로 완성된 오브제로서의 그림을 가리키지만 나에게 페인팅은 명사가 아닌 동사에 가깝다. 그것은 행위이며, 과정 그 자체이다. 페인팅은 긴(짧은) 시간을 거쳐 무언가를 해나가는 과정이며, 페인팅의 표면은 화가가 견뎌온 과정의 역사를 고스란히 보여 준다. 페인팅 작업은 변화의 연속이며 그래서 언제나 끝나지 않은 불완전의 상태에 머물러 있다. 그래서 페인팅은 완결이 아닌 페인팅이 되어가는 단계로 존재한다.

Painting is a doing word. Even if we often use this term as the finished object, but I consider this term is more like a verb. It is an act and the process itself. Painting is the process of doing something over a long or short time and the surface of the painting shows the history of the process the painter has been doing. The process of painting is a consecutive change, so it always unfinished. Therefore, painting for me exists as a phase of becoming a painting, not a completion.
